Garrett Broshuis for WSJ

Last month I got called up to the big leagues and was hired to shoot my first portrait for the Wall Street Journal (s/o to Timmy Huynh and Tracy Armstead for the gig). I drove to St. Louis early on a Friday morning to meet former minor league pitcher Garrett Broshuis at the St. Louis University baseball field downtown. Broshuis is a Mizzou grad who played with one of my favorite current MLB players, Ian Kinsler, during his time as a Tiger. The conversation flowed easily as we talked about our memories in Columbia and our qualms with professional sports. It was a great first assignment.

Broshuis has since left the world of baseball and is a now a lawyer, representing minor league players in a suit against Major League Baseball for illegal working conditions. To read more about his story, check out a great article by Ashby Jones on the WSJ website:

Here are a couple of photos I made that day:

New York Mets for SI

At 5:00 p.m. on Friday, I quickly gathered my things and ran to the 42nd St.-Times Square subway stop to catch the Queens-bound 7 train. After 45 minutes of traveling I reached the stop for Citi Field in Flushing. Nervous, I stepped off of the train and headed to the gate to get my media credentials. As the ballpark worker handed me my first and third base photo passes, I couldn't do anything but smile. After all, it's not every day that you recieve your first Major League Baseball credentials for Sports Illustrated.

The Mets were hosting the Kansas City Royals - my team away from home (I'll always be a Rangers fan first) - so I was pretty excited to catch them while they were in New York. Shooting the match-up was dream come true. It was better than Christmas, Thanksgiving and my birthday all rolled into one.

Four days later, I was given the opportunity to shoot the Mets again as Matt Harvey took the mound against the Colorado Rockies. Since my first game, I had recieved a lot of feedback and was excited to see what I could improve upon from my first game.

Here are my favorite shots from the two games. Enjoy!
