Wichita Kansas

Bernie Sanders and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez for The Guardian

I've become quite familiar with the drive to Wichita, KS the last few years. I used to be bored of it – all of the rolling hills used to seem repetitive and dull – but now, I love the drive. Its beauty has grown on me and the expansiveness gives me the opportunity to focus on my upcoming assignment while en route, and to decompress and reflect on my way home.

I needed a lot of time to process what I had taken in on my latest trip to "The Air Capital of the World," where I spent the late morning and early afternoon following rising political star Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Senator Bernie Sanders as they campaigned for local congressional hopeful, democrat James Thompson. The energy was palpable in the arena, as over 3,000 people gathered on a weekday afternoon to hear the trio speak about the future of the Democratic party and the country. I was privy to some quiet moments that were very special, and was hopefully able to convey that in the photos I made, a few of which I'll post here:

NCAA Tournament Round 1: Penn V Kansas for the Philly Inquirer

Last week I traveled to Wichita, Kan. to cover the first round of the NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament matchup between the no. 1 seeded Kansas Jayhawks and no. 16 seeded Penn Quakers. Sports writers from various publications picked the upset. It was a wild game and the underdogs stole the lead early on. But, Kansas being Kansas, the Jayhawks regained their composure toward the end of the first half and from then on the Quakers couldn't keep up. Here are a few of my favorite images from the trip.

Wichita Aerospace for WSJ

Last week I woke up before the sun rose and drove down Interstate 35 to Wichita, Kansas to photograph the changing and rebounding aerospace industry there. I visited the beautiful new Innovation Campus at Wichita State University, watched 737s be assembled at the Spirit Aerosystems facility, and observed a few classes at the Wichita Area Technical College. Big thanks to my editor Parker Eshelman for such a riveting assignment!
